Zaporizhia Oblast (
translit. Zaporiz'ka oblast’; also referred to as
Zaporizhchyna) is an
oblast (province) of southern
Ukraine. Its
capital is
Zaporizhia.
This oblast is an important part of Ukraine's industry and agriculture.
Geography
The area of the province is 27,200 km²; its population (as of
2004-
05-01) is 1.9 million.

History
The Zaporizhia Oblast was created as part of the
Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic on
January 10,
1939.
The territory of the oblast came under the dominion of the
Golden Horde after the fall of
Kievan Rus'. The
steppes off of the
Dnieper River were subsequently ruled by the
Crimean Khanate, beginning in
1445.
From the
15th century to the
18th century, the northern parts of the province belonged to the
Zaporizhian Sich - a self-governed military
republic of the
Ukrainian Kozaks.
Subdivisions
The Zaporizhia Oblast is administratively subdivided into 20
raions (
districts) as well as 5 cities (
municipalities) which are directly subordinate to the oblast government:
Berdiansk,
Enerhodar,
Melitopol,
Tokmak, and the administrative center of the oblast,
Zaporizhia.
